COLUMBIA, South Carolina (WCBD) – The South Carolina primary health agency on Thursday addressed some questions regarding the increase in recent earthquakes in central regions and whether they were caused by mines.

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Elgin, South Carolina on the morning of June 29 – followed by a series of aftershocks in the area, including a 3.6-magnitude earthquake that shook most of the area around 7:00 p.m. that same evening.

A magnitude 2.32 earthquake was recorded around midnight Thursday, with additional aftershocks in the morning, several hours apart.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said the permitted mine sites in the area are shallow pits, most of which are 30 feet deep or less.

“Its shallowness is not expected to contribute to seismic activity, especially with recent earthquakes recorded at a depth of 6,336 to 12,672 feet, according to the US Geological Survey,” the agency said.

Health officials have said that even the deepest permitted mine site – 900 feet – is nowhere near the depth at which earthquakes have been reported and is located within 75 miles of Elgin.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management also stated that the quakes had nothing to do with mining or any other human cause. They encourage all South Carolinas to prepare for earthquake activity, as they are not uncommon in the state.
