Two earthquakes were recorded Thursday night in the Midlands after the 2 a.m. quakes

Kershaw County, South Carolina (WCSC) – After two earthquakes were recorded in the morning, two more were recorded Thursday night in Kershaw County.

The first earthquake during the night was a 2.1 magnitude earthquake centered 3.5 miles northeast of Lugoff, reported around 8:45 pm, and the second was a 1.1 on the Richter scale centered 3.4 miles south of Lugoff at 9:05 pm.

Earlier in the day, the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management said the recent series of earthquakes in the center may be the longest consecutive earthquake in the state’s history.

Two earthquakes were recorded early Thursday morning in Kershaw County. The earthquakes are the latest in a string of earthquakes to hit the Midlands this week.

The US Geological Survey reported that a 2.4-magnitude earthquake was detected 3.7 miles south-southwest of Lugoff at 12:23 a.m. Thursday.

The US Geological Survey said the second quake had a magnitude of 2.02 a few hours later near Elgin at 5:22 a.m.

The latest quakes came less than a day after a 3.6-magnitude quake hit the region.

The earthquakes amounted to nine in the past 24 hours, and the total number of earthquakes to hit the region has reached 14 since Sunday.

On Wednesday, seven earthquakes hit the region.

The first reported earthquake on Wednesday had a magnitude of 3.5 and occurred at 2:43 pm, the USGS said, with its epicenter 3.2 miles east of Elgin, or about 20.5 miles northeast of Columbia.

A second 2.1-magnitude earthquake occurred 14 minutes later at 2:57 p.m., with its epicenter 3.8 miles east of Elgin, or 20.9 miles east and northeast of Columbia.

Two smaller earthquakes, with a magnitude of 1.9 at 3:02 p.m. and a magnitude of 1.5 at 3:34 p.m.

Then, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake was reported 1.8 miles east of Elgin at 7:03 p.m. Wednesday.

The 3.6-magnitude earthquake was the most powerful earthquake documented by the US Geological Survey in the region last year.

Two small earthquakes followed Wednesday night.

The first 1.46-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:22 p.m. in the same area and a 1.79-magnitude earthquake followed less than a minute later 4.4 miles southwest of Lugoff.

The latest quake adds to a list of earthquakes in the Midlands that began early Sunday morning when a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck Kershaw County at about 1:30 a.m. Four aftershocks were recorded over the course of Sunday.

Earthquake activity wasn’t limited to the Midlands this week as a 1.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Centerville in Dorchester County early Monday morning.
