‘This house killed my sister’: Children are afraid to go home in earthquake-stricken Afghanistan

KABUL, 1 July 2022 – Children in Paktika province, one of the areas worst affected by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan nine days ago, are still afraid to go home where their loved ones were killed, Save the Children said.

Earthquakes and aftershocks continue to rock the area, evoking memories of the earthquake that left 362,000 children and adults in dire need of food, shelter, access to health care, clean water and sanitation. Some 770 people – including 155 children – were killed in the earthquake and nearly 1,500 people were injured.

Hakim*, 35, lost his two young daughters, a niece and a nephew when their house collapsed on top of them. He said his children and nephews are still grieving over what happened to them.

Eight of the children cried when I brought them back to the destroyed house for the first time. “Seeing the destruction and thinking about what happened to them on the night of the earthquake, they were terrified of the house,” Hakim said.

“My nephew Fred* (4) asked me why I brought him home. I told him we would rebuild the house for you, and you would live in it again. He told me he would destroy the house so we could never go back to it again. [because he is so scared of living in there again]. ”

Chris Nyamandi, Save the Children Afghanistan country director, who visited earthquake-affected families this week, said:

“I have more than 20 years working in humanitarian disasters and what I saw was really horrific. People have lost everything – their clothes, livestock, homes and loved ones. I also met many families who sleep in the open due to large cracks in their homes, fearing that aftershocks will cause their homes collapse.

“I met kids who are still in complete shock at what happened to them. They told me: This house killed my sister. This house killed my brother. I don’t want to go back inside there. It really hurts the heart.”

This disaster could have been devastating on its own, but Afghanistan was already facing catastrophic levels of hunger, a collapsing health system, and severe economic hardship. This is an emergency situation in an emergency situation and children – not only in earthquake-affected areas but across the country – need urgent support.

“Governments can – and must – respond urgently. First and foremost, they can provide financial support. This will enable the life-saving work that is taking place now and over the coming weeks, but also the long-term work to help these communities recover.

“Crucially, this support cannot come at the expense of the current humanitarian appeal which contains only about a third of the total needed for 2022. This is an additional new emergency and requires new additional funding. NGOs such as Save the Children are currently withdrawing staff and resources from our programs current humanitarian response to the earthquake, which will have an immediate impact if funding is not renewed.”

Save the Children has dispatched teams to the worst affected areas of Paktika District and is providing families with emergency cash grants to support them in purchasing shelter materials to rebuild their homes and purchasing and paying for other urgent supplies, such as food and clean water. healthcare. The agency is also conducting further assessments to determine the needs of children.
