Do mines cause earthquakes in South Carolina? DHEC says no

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control answered some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the recent Elgin earthquake

Columbia, South Carolina – With the latest earthquake swarm – nine earthquakes on Wednesday and Thursday alone – South Carolina’s largest health agency is providing some answers.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has taken to social media to answer some questions about the cause of the tremors.

Could the earthquakes be the result of mining operations in the Logoff Elgin region? The mines permitted by DHEC in the area are surface pits, most of which are 30 feet deep or less. The shallowness of these mining pits is not expected to contribute to seismic activity.

How about a gold mine near Ridgway? Even the Hailey Gold Mine, included in DHEC data due to its proximity (about 40 miles from Elgin), is not deep enough to cause or contribute to earthquakes. The deepest mine in the region is 900 feet deep and is located approximately 75 miles.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the depth of origin of the recent earthquakes from 6,336 to 12,672 feet.

Could fracking – injecting pressurized steam into the ground to reach deposits of oil and minerals underground – cause earthquakes? There are no crushing operations in South Carolina.

There are several fault lines operating throughout South Carolina, making the state one of the most seismically active states on the East Coast. The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management (SCEMD) has published an earthquake guide that provides the history of earthquakes in South Carolina and advice on surviving earthquakes.

How do you track or get hold of recent earthquakes? The United States Geological Survey (USGS) records information about earthquakes around the world. You can get the latest information on the USGS website and you can filter your results to see earthquakes in your area over time.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in the Elgin region, says the USGS, “but having a series of about 40 earthquakes in such a short time is unusual. Many earthquakes of the same magnitude have occurred in the eastern United States, but they are very rare. Grounds for a much larger earthquake. This swarm will continue for an unknown period of time, and if it stops it may resume sometime in the future.”

As of Thursday, June 30, 2022, there have been 43 earthquakes in the same area around Elgin since December 2021.

The USGS also reports that the current series of Elgin earthquakes does not appear to be related to the seven reported earthquakes near Jenkinsville and the Monticello Reservoir in October 2021.
