ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colorado (KCNC) – A rockslide has closed part of Rocky Mountain National Park. The slide occurred in the Upper Chaos Canyon area of the park on Tuesday.
The image from Google Earth shows several outcrops on the south shoulder of Hallett Peak that touched down around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Rainstorms are expected in the forecast for the area through July 3 that may contribute to additional rockfall activity. No one is hurt.
The USGS says the slip was “preceded by about 100 seconds before that by a signal similar to the M1.5 earthquake that occurred at or near the surface in the area where the landslide occurred.”
Instead, the scientists say, “sudden rockfalls with significant free fall can generate signals that look like shallow earthquakes.”
RMNP has closed all Chaos Canyon areas west of Lake Haiyaha to all users due to rockfall activity and potential impacts. The closure will remain in place until the forecast rainstorms have passed and the slope can be assessed by National Park Service geologists.
The hiking trail to Lake Haiyaha and Lake Haiyaha itself, and the hiking trails on the north side of Hallett Peak remain open. The rocky area in the Lower Chaos Valley, on the north and east shore of Lake Hayaha, will remain open.
Park visitors who plan to recreate in the rocky terrain areas of the park are reminded to exercise due diligence and always exercise caution. Rocky slopes above and near mountaintops can be unstable. Entertainment users must know their own limits and choose paths that are within the capabilities of everyone in their party.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
