6.3-magnitude earthquake hits southern Iran, killing 5 and injuring 44; I felt tremors in the Emirates too

At least five people were killed and 44 others injured in a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Iran early Saturday, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck 100 km southwest of the coastal city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province at 1:32 a.m.

Iranian media estimated the earthquake’s strength at 6.1, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said it was 6.0 on the Richter scale. MSC said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

The US Geological Survey said the quakes were followed by at least 7 other minor earthquakes, with a magnitude of 4.3 to 6.

All the wounded were taken to hospitals.

According to the Iranian Islamic Republic News Agency, quoting a member of the Islamic Council of the village, three people were killed in the village of Sayeh Khosh, near the epicenter of the quake.

The Khaleej Times reported that the earthquake was so strong that it was felt in different parts of the Emirates. However, no loss of life or property damage has been reported so far.

The stricken residents took to social media to share videos of the earthquake and its aftermath.

Iran is considered a region of strong seismic activity as it lies on the edge of many tectonic plates and crosses different fault lines.

The deadliest earthquake in Iran was the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in 1990, which killed 40,000 people in the north of the country.
