Updated / The Iraqi Red Crescent responds to the Hormozgan earthquake – Iran (Islamic Republic of)

BANDAR ABBAS (IRCS) – The Iranian Red Crescent Society is providing relief services to those affected after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the port of Khmer in the southern province of Hormozgan.

The earthquake occurred at 2:02 a.m. (local time) on Saturday, July 2, at a depth of 10 kilometers, just one minute after the 5.7 earthquake.

After the earthquake, the Iranian Red Crescent sent its assessment and relief teams to the area immediately.

The earthquake killed five people and injured 45 others.

Twenty-three people received outpatient services and the others were transferred to medical centers.

The Red Crescent has sent a Rubb Hall tent to the Khmer port to house at least 300 people. This tent is equipped with a cooling system.

The Red Crescent has also deployed 27 search and rescue teams (consisting of 105 rescuers and relief workers) in addition to sniffer dogs in the affected areas.

Moreover, Red Crescent helicopters, ambulances and relief vehicles are stationed in the area.

“The Red Crescent has set up an emergency shelter camp in Bandar Abbas Al-Farsi Stadium. Relief items are being sent to the area from some provinces,” said Yaqoub Soleimani, Secretary-General of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society.

There are 2,051 families and a total of 7,866 people living in the epicenter.

Mahdi Falibour, head of the relief and rescue organization of the Iraqi Red Crescent, said that the reports of the evaluation teams of the Red Crescent show the destruction of a large number of houses in Sayeh Khosh village in Bandar Lengeh district.

2,500 blankets were sent to Hormozgan from the Qom Red Crescent Governorate branch.

One person was killed in November last year when two earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 struck the province of Hormozgan.
