USGS announces another earthquake in Elgin

Elgin, South Carolina (WBTW) – Another small earthquake was recorded late Saturday morning in Kershaw County, adding to a string of earthquakes that have hit the area since late December.

The 2.1-magnitude earthquake struck around 11:59 a.m. and had its epicenter 3.9 miles east of Elgin, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earthquakes began to hit the area around Elgin Wednesday morning, with aftershocks being felt for hours. The initial earthquake that morning was a magnitude 3.5, and there was a magnitude 3.6 aftershock recorded around 7pm.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on Thursday addressed whether mine sites allowed in the area might be responsible for earthquakes. Most are 30 feet deep or less.

“Its shallowness is not expected to contribute to seismic activity, especially with recent earthquakes recorded at a depth of 6,336 to 12,672 feet, according to the US Geological Survey,” the agency said.

Health officials have said that even the deepest permitted mine site – 900 feet – is nowhere near the depth at which earthquakes have been reported. It is 75 miles from Elgin.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management also said the quakes had nothing to do with mining or any other human cause. They encourage all South Carolinas to prepare for earthquake activity, as they are not uncommon in the state.
