July 2 (UPI) – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in southern Iran on Saturday killed at least five people, injured dozens more and displaced people from their homes.

More than a dozen aftershocks with a magnitude of 6.3 followed the first quake that hit the villages of Sayeh Khosh and Bandar Khamir in Hormozgan province in the early morning, according to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the state news agency. , the Iranian news agency (IRNA) reported.

It is believed that all dead and injured from the first earthquake of magnitude 6.1.

“All the victims were killed in the first earthquake and no one was hurt in the next two because people were already outside their homes,” Bandar Lengeh Governor Fuad Moradzadeh told the semi-official Iranian news agency.

The earthquakes displaced thousands of people, with a number of people staying in the tents set up by local authorities in the streets.

Video footage on social media and state television showed destroyed homes in several villages, according to Al Jazeera, and the earthquakes caused a brief power outage.

First Vice President Mohammad Moheber directed the governor-general of Hormozgan Province to deploy the first responders to confront the disaster, according to a report by the Islamic Republic News Agency of Iran.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society tweeted that 75 rescue operations using 12 operation vehicles were operating in the earthquake-affected areas.

CNN staff on the ground reported that shaking could be felt in the United Arab Emirates.

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and Afghanistan were also affected, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS added that seismic activity in the area is “relatively common”, as the area lies on a major fault line and is prone to earthquakes.
