Several earthquakes have been reported in South Carolina today and in the past few days, mostly in the Elgin area

South Carolina – As we reported on Wednesday, two earthquakes were recorded in the Elgin region in less than 15 minutes.

According to the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management (SCEMD), the first 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded Wednesday at 2:43 p.m. with its epicenter 3 miles east of Elgin.

Less than 15 minutes later, at 2:57 p.m., a 2.06-magnitude earthquake struck the Elgin region again. According to SCEMD, it was centered 3.8 miles east of Elgin.

In the following days, several earthquakes were recorded in the Elgin region. A small earthquake occurred at 9:10 pm on Friday with a magnitude of 1.7.

A 2.1-magnitude earthquake hit the ground near Elgin again on Saturday. The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at 11:59 am. It happened 3.9 miles east of Elgin.

Today, the USGS reported a 1.9-magnitude earthquake 3 miles east of Elgin at 12:16 a.m. At 6:30 a.m., the USGS reported a 1.6-magnitude earthquake 4.3 miles SW Logoff.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management explained that there are several fault systems operating throughout South Carolina and this is the cause of earthquakes in the area. According to SCEMD, Palmetto State is one of the most seismically active states on the East Coast!
