While his peers have been achieving success in television and movies for the past 30 years, Earthquake has built his reputation perfectly on stage. He developed a distinctive style of writing jokes and a relentless presence on the stage; You don’t want to follow him in the lineup. Now, decades later, he’s finally found success in Hollywood with a special fit for his talent: the legendary. Presented to Netflix by Dave Chappelle, the special, which premiered in February, resulted in opportunities on stage (his first tour of the main stage, beginning in a few days) and off (hobnobbing with Ted Sarandos and the greatest comedians alive in the lunch).

I don’t believe in elongation. I don’t have fillers. My jokes are like a debate class: just go to the topic, make the point, and then move on. I’ve come up with what I want to say, then: How do I compress it into something funny and say it in as few words as possible?

Coming from a large family, when you talk to Mama, there’s no “you should know I was going outside and was…” because she was saying, “What the fuck is that?” Only: “Can I go out?” This is it. Don’t get overwhelmed. Some comedians put a full 30 minutes into what I cut into two. It’s more work for me, but that’s why Dave Chappelle and I just got to the point where we gave you over 36 years. They’ll do an hour, but I don’t need an hour. This quality outweighs the quantity.

If my madam tries to leave, I can at least say, ‘Jerry believes in me now.’ It comes from innocence, the insecurity I feel I can’t handle calmly. If my God and my Maker have already imparted the gifts He desires of me, I should only wake up in the morning and live what He wants me to do, and He will show me what He wants me to have.

What we do is personal, so what is funny to one person is not funny to others. I try to tell young comedians about this all the time. The only difference between me and Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, and any of the superstars, is that they were given the opportunity and they took advantage of it, which led to more opportunities. But you can be human and see people starting to get a shot at, like, damn it. It’s really very frustrating when you see someone who doesn’t have the chops, or you know you’re better than them, you get a chance.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can really sit back now and say I made it. I am at the highest level. I understand why God didn’t give me that then: because I’m going to die now. This level I see, you need your body, your mind, your spirit, your support system. You need all of that to survive. If you sell 14,000 tickets, and I sell 300 tickets, I still don’t think you have a better bid than I did. It’s just that so many fuckers know more about you than they do about me. And if they like you, wait until they see me. I’ve always had this attitude, and I still do.
