Study finds Pacific tsunami could hit Seattle in minutes

A new study shows that tsunami waves off the coast of Washington will reach the eastern side of Bainbridge Island, Elliott Bay, and Alki Point in less than three minutes.

The study was conducted by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which analyzed the potential hazards that an earthquake and subsequent tsunami could cause in the Puget Sound region.

Developed by geologists in the Washington Division of the Geological Survey at DNR, this study was conducted to help local and state emergency managers and planners develop and improve tsunami response and preparedness plans in the midst of Washington’s largest population center and economic hub.

Study says the worst tsunami in the northwest is underestimated

The report showed that floods from such a tsunami could exceed 20 feet along the coastline of the greater Seattle area.

Most often, when we think of tsunamis, we think of our offshore coast and our communities along the Pacific Ocean. “There is a long history of earthquakes on faults in Puget Sound,” Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz said in a prepared statement. “While the history of earthquakes and tsunamis along the Seattle Fault is less frequent than the Cascadia subduction zone, the impacts can be enormous. That is why it is so important that these communities have the information they need to prepare and respond.”

The last known earthquake occurred at the Seattle Fault about 1,100 years ago. However, geological evidence indicates that five additional earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 have occurred within the Seattle Fault Zone in the past 3,500 years.

“Our top responsibility as management is to keep our residents safe, and studies like this are an important tool in this effort to analyze data, understand risks and forecasts, and better prepare for future emergencies,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said in response. “We will continue to ensure that our Emergency Management Office – and all of our departments – are best equipped to respond to emergencies and natural disasters, while also strengthening our infrastructure and building a resilient city now and into the future.”

“Although the chances of this happening in our lifetimes are low, it is important that families prepare now,” said Maximilian Dixon, director of the Hazards and Awareness Program for the Washington Department of Emergency Management. “The ground shaking will warn you of a possible tsunami on the way. The recent earthquake was so great that it pushed the shore at the recovery point on Bainbridge Island up by 23 feet while tumbling to land at West Point in Seattle by three feet. Changes in ground level during the next earthquake may create a new shoreline at many locations near the Seattle Fault Zone.
