Another earthquake hits SC as longest swarm in modern history continues

Elgin, South Carolina (Fox Carolina) – Another earthquake was reported near the Midlands Friday morning as the longest swarm in recent history continues.

A 1.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Elgin around 6 a.m., and a 2.1-magnitude earthquake struck Elgin Thursday morning.

In the previous week, 21 earthquakes shook the Midlands. Geologists say they are all part of the same earthquake swarm that began on December 27, 2021.

The strongest earthquake in the swarm, with a magnitude of 3.6, was reported on June 29.

“These earthquakes are now the longest series of earthquakes in modern history,” said state geologist Scott Howard. “Unlike the swarms of earthquakes that occur elsewhere in the country, these were low in magnitude and did not pose a danger to people, fortunately.”

While the source of the earthquakes is unknown, Howard said they have nothing to do with mining activity or any other human cause.

Seismologists don’t think low-amplitude earthquakes indicate large ones are coming, according to the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management.

Several fault lines run through central South Carolina.
