Weak earthquake strikes New Brunswick; Northeast shake

A relatively weak earthquake hit New Brunswick early this morning, shaking parts of the Northeast. This is the second earthquake in as many days to hit parts of northern Maine and one of several that have shook Maine, Quebec and New Brunswick in recent weeks. According to the USGS, today’s earthquake occurred in central New Brunswick about 30 miles west and northwest of Miramichi, Canada. Striking at 2:24 a.m. local time, the 2.9-magnitude event was weak but was the most powerful recent earthquake to affect the region over the past week. The depth of the epicenter was 6.6 km. No damage was reported from the earthquake.
Today’s quake comes on top of a pair of earthquakes with an epicenter outside Quebec, Canada, that shook northern Maine, with the most recent earthquake striking at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday about 6 miles west-southwest of La Bouquetre, Canada. La Boucatere is a town located in the Camorasca Regional Municipality in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada; The epicenter of the earthquake was located on the bank of the Saint Lawrence River. Five days earlier on July 1, an earthquake also struck the opposite bank of the Saint Lawrence River at about 5:30 p.m. Both earthquakes were relatively weak and were classified by the USGS as a magnitude 2.3 event.
Although not famous for its earthquakes, Maine does get one from time to time. On April 24, an earthquake struck central Maine, the sixth to hit Derigo this year. The epicenter of the 2.5-magnitude earthquake was about 3 miles south of Sepik, Maine; The epicenter was at a depth of 3.3 miles. Although there has been no report of any damage, over a dozen people have used “Have you felt it?” A reporting tool to report how they felt an earthquake.

Earlier that month, on April 2, a 2.0-magnitude earthquake struck about 7 miles southeast of Waterville, near the Winslow-China town line. On March 8, a 2.1-magnitude earthquake occurred about two miles north of Lake Tonk in East Hancock County. On February 12, a 2.4-magnitude earthquake struck 12 miles west of Holton. Some locals reported feeling shivering afterwards. On February 4, a magnitude 2.9 event was widely felt in the Bethel region of western Maine, 8 miles from the epicenter in Gorham, New Hampshire. People within 25 miles of the epicenter felt it in Maine. Two earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 struck on January 17th. One was about two miles west of Springvale, and the other was about 1/2 mile south of Springvale.
The most powerful earthquake to hit Maine in the past 10 years was a 4.5-magnitude event on October 16, 2012 in East Waterboro, about 13 miles northwest of Saco.
The US Geological Survey was tracking an unusual swarm of earthquakes that struck central South Carolina. While North Carolina and South Carolina have also been hit by earthquakes, the earthquakes that struck the area north and east of Columbia near Elgin made experts scratch their heads. Photo: USGS
According to the Maine Geological Survey of the Department of Conservation, seismic activity in Maine is typical of the Appalachian region of northeastern North America. “There is a low but consistent rate of earthquake occurrence,” they report, adding that “the earthquakes are presumed to be caused by recent stress sometimes released along areas of weakness in the Earth’s crust, but the most specific cause of earthquake activity is not known.”
There have been other areas of earthquakes in eastern North America that the USGS also tracks. In recent days, there have been a series of earthquakes in Missouri, Tennessee, and an unusually long-lasting swarm has occurred in South Carolina. However, given the distance between all earthquake events, none of them are thought to be related to the other.
