An earthquake near Seattle could trigger a massive tsunami within minutes, the state warns

A new state report finds that if a major earthquake strikes off the coast of Seattle, the resulting tremors could send a 20-foot wall of water toward the city.

The researchers found that with a major earthquake, the landscape can change dramatically, and the massive waves will reach shore within three minutes, with the after-effects lasting a few more hours.

The findings underscore potential tsunami hazards in this tectonically active region—even somewhere like Seattle, which lies comfortably far from the ocean within Puget Sound.

“Most of the time, when we think of tsunamis, we think of our outer coast and our communities along the Pacific Ocean,” Washington Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz said in a news release.

“But there is a long history of earthquakes on faults in Puget Sound.”

Much like the Pacific Rim, Washington’s coast is riddled with fault lines, including the Seattle Fault, which runs directly below the Sound and City. The state says the last time an earthquake hit that fault was about 1,100 years ago, but the fault can still shift.

This study modeled a roughly 7.5-magnitude earthquake under Puget Sound along the Seattle Fault as something of a worst-case scenario.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake would be classified as a major earthquake, and would likely cause significant damage.

In a matter of minutes, massive waves, 10 feet or higher, will crash into Seattle on the east side of the Sound and Bainbridge Island on the west side. Density will be higher in the rift zone, but will spread over the entire inland coastal region, from Bellingham in the north to Olympia in the south.

Maps show that a spot like the Great Seattle Wheel on Elliott Bay can see more than 40 feet of water.

In addition, part of this water will move very quickly – about 4 meters per second at the fastest time, which can cause additional destruction.

Besides the initial impact of the tsunami, the water generated by the sound would continue to submerge parts of the city for hours. Water can reach far inland in some places.

This study documents an unlikely, but potentially devastating, impact on an urban area in the United States, where more than 700,000 people live in Seattle alone. The results showed that many people near the coast would have only minutes to respond if such an earthquake occurred.

“Although the chances of this happening in our lifetimes are low, it is important that families prepare now,” Maximilian Dixon, of the Washington Department of Emergency Management, said via the statement.

In addition to earthquakes along any number of faults surrounding the Puget Sound, the Pacific Northwest faces a potential major earthquake risk in the Cascadia subduction zone, where the Juan de Fuca and Gorda tectonic plates slide beneath the North American tectonic plate.
