A 42-foot tsunami is possible in Seattle if a 7.5-magnitude earthquake

Simulations have shown that tsunami waves as high as 42 feet can hit the US city of Seattle in the event of a strong earthquake.

According to a scientific model designed by geologists at the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, a tsunami would hit the shoreline in less than three minutes if a 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the Seattle Fault.

The study will reportedly help local and state emergency officials improve response in the event of a disaster in the midst of Washington’s largest population and economic hub.

“There is a long history of earthquakes on faults in Puget Sound,” Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz said in a media statement.

The Seattle East-West Fault crosses through Puget Sound and downtown Seattle, and has caused several earthquakes throughout the region.

“While the history of earthquakes and tsunamis along the Seattle Fault is less frequent than the Cascadia subduction zone, the effects can be enormous,” Franz said.

The model does not take into account tidal phases or local tsunamis caused by landslides caused by earthquakes.

The report said the last known earthquake on the Seattle Fault occurred about 1,100 years ago. However, geological evidence indicates that five additional earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 have occurred within the Seattle Fault Zone in the past 3,500 years.

“Although the chances of this happening in our lifetimes are low, it is important that families prepare now,” said Maximilian Dixon, director of the Hazards and Awareness Program for the Washington Department of Emergency Management.
