Quebec, north of Montreal, was shaken by the second earthquake in three days

People living in Laurentians felt the ground move under their feet on Sunday morning. A three-magnitude earthquake hit the area around 11:30 a.m. The epicenter of the seismic activity occurred four kilometers northwest of Saint-Sauveur, about 19.1 kilometers underground.

Residents of Saint-Jérôme, Saint-Anne-des-Lacs, Val-Morin and Sainte-Agathe took to the Météo Laurentides Facebook page to share their experiences.

“I’m at Ste-Adele and I was on the phone with my mother in Val-David. We felt it at about the same time. The rumbling lasted about thirty seconds.”

MétéoMédia reports that tremors can be felt for several seconds, accompanied by a continuous loud noise. So far, there were no reports that the low-intensity quake caused damage to buildings or roads.

Meanwhile, on Friday, two earthquakes of the same magnitude struck the same region – one 13 kilometers north of La Boucatere and another seven kilometers from Saint-Sauveur.

Earthquakes of less than 2.5 magnitude are usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph. It is most often felt in people between the ages of 2.5 and 5.4 but causes only minor damage.

Western Quebec is subject to seismic activity, especially along the banks of the Ottawa River and the Maniwaki-Montreal fault line. In fact, an earthquake occurs every five days on average in the western part of the province.

Last year, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake hit Joliet on May 17. The earthquake was felt as far as Montreal on the northern and southern beaches.
