Survivor of the deadly 2010 Haiti earthquake becomes a US citizen

San Antonio – “I heard that loud roar, but it was loud but loud. It was weird. And the next thing I knew, I was on the floor and the ceiling was off my face,” Bethley Ball described with her hand close to her face.

We’ve been following Bethley Ball’s story for more than a decade, ever since the 10-year-old came to the United States from Haiti.

Sitting with Paul, it will only take a minute before her outrageous personality and glowing spirit make you laugh.

“What word would you describe me with? An adventurer, I think,” said Paul.

Little Paul’s life was nothing less than a road trip – she worked as a flight attendant, travels to new places. I attended San Antonio College and UTSA to study psychology.

“I love giving to people, like helping others,” she explained.

She lived through a 7.0 earthquake in Haiti that killed 220,000 people. She almost lost a leg after being crushed and was trapped for hours in her school.

When she was finally released, Paul said the look on her mother’s face stuck with her.

“This is the time when I knew I didn’t know what was going to happen in my life. I didn’t know what was next,” Paul said as her voice cracked. “Unfortunately I can not.”

Doctors saved her life at Christos Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital and was greeted by a familiar face for two years… Steve Sprester and his family.

“It’s good to have not just one set of family, but two sets of family cheering me on,” Paul said.

Paul’s mother and father are now with her in San Antonio. Her brother Leo was born here.

“He’s seven, he’s my favorite person in the whole world. I can’t live without this guy,” she said.

The two families, the Spresters and Bulls, cheered Bethley when she became a US citizen on Friday.

“I’m the first American in the entire family to have had this operation,” Paul said. “Now my mother is motivated to go through this operation.”

This is just the last chapter in her adventure in life.

“I’m Bethley. I’m Haitian. I’m American. I’m silly. I’m vulgar. I’m a totally loving person,” said Paul.

As much as what’s next for Bethley, she wants to return to being a flight attendant while she finishes her studies.

In the future, she would like to open her holistic clinic with medical technologies from all over the world to help people in any way they need to.
