Hong Kong security law: life sentences violated by China – BBC News

The people of Hong Kong could face life in prison for violating a controversial new security law imposed by China. The legislation went into effect on Tuesday, but the full text was revealed a few hours later. Beijing led to growing unrest in the pro-democracy movement. Critics say the new law will effectively reduce protests and undermine Hong Kong’s freedoms. The territory was ceded to China from British control in 1997, but under a special agreement, the people of mainland China will not be protected by certain freedoms – including freedom of expression. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lame defended the law, saying it filled a “hole” in national security. The details have been well taken care of and the Beijing-backed politician admitted that he did not see the editorial before commenting. #BBCOS #BBCOutsideSource Subscribe HERE .
