USMNT great Landon Donovan among finalists to dominate San Jose Earthquakes

Sources told ESPN that Landon Donovan is among the finalists to take over as San Jose Earthquakes manager.

One of the sources said that seismology is in the final stage of the interview process with five candidates in addition to the existing training staff in mind. The source added that San Jose interviewed more than 10 people in the process.

The quakes separated Mathias Almeida in April, and since then they have been managed on a temporary basis by Alex Covello.

Donovan, 40, is in his third season running San Diego Loyal in the USL Division II Championship, with the team finishing third in the 14-team Western Conference with 34 points from 19 games played. In addition to his managerial duties, Donovan is also the co-owner and executive vice president of football operations.

In 2021, Donovan was among several names associated with the Real Salt Lake job, but eventually withdrew his name from consideration, with the position eventually passing to his former US international teammate, Pablo Mastroini. Donovan has also pursued other jobs at MLS in the past.

Donovan did not respond to a text message requesting comment. A seismology spokesperson also declined to comment.

Donovan’s all-time record with the pro is 30-23-15. He led San Diego to the playoffs last season, losing in the first round to San Antonio FC. Along the way, he’s built a reputation as a fierce defender for his players, including an incident in 2020 when he pulled his side off the field after midfielder Colin Martin was criticized for being homophobic by Phoenix Rising striker Junior Flemings.

If Donovan gets a job at San Jose, it would be a fantastic return to the organization where he spent four seasons and led the team to the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cups.
