This residential design by Jones Haydoo Architects in San Francisco’s Dolores Heights reimagines one of the city’s typical earthquake cottages.

In a famous mountain neighborhood in San Francisco, the stunning Dolores Heights House stands – at once at home in its residential context of period properties, but also distinctly distinct, with its clear lines and unmistakable contemporary design. Founder of Sawyers Interior Design Studio, Kevin Sawers and his husband owned the site and the earthquake cottage – a structure originally designed as part of a series of temporary housing units for some 250,000 residents displaced after the 1906 earthquake that shook San Francisco. However, the modest country house was in dire need of updating, so the owners began to transform. Working with local architecture firm Jones Haydu, Sawers and his team have created a perfect example of how a modern building can respect its history and context, while introducing something completely new and fresh.

Spread over three levels and over 3,000 square feet, the home has a sharp, angular facade with large windows and an array of wood, glass, and metal cladding. Metal elements give it a somewhat industrial feel, yet the warm exposed wood, often found in Jones Haydu’s work, ensures that the home is completely at home on the quaint streets of San Francisco. Despite its contemporary exterior, the house sits in harmony between the colorful dwellings and tree surroundings typical of the Dolores Highlands.

Inside, the interior design blends functionality and comfort, and large openings make up for great views of San Francisco. Stone and marble features are found throughout the home, such as the fireplace, kitchen countertops, bathrooms, and bedroom floors. However, this coolness is counterbalanced by the wood lining of some surfaces, the warm cream covering the walls, and the sun bathing in the windows.

The main living space looks rich and multi-layered, decorated with lush and boldly colored rug, crafts, art and design elements, high and luxurious ceilings. It leads through dark metallic French doors to a surface emerging from the sloping roof volume – part of a constellation of simple primitive forms, which create an ‘almost childlike expression’, as Jones Hideo Architects explain. The rooftop overlooks the many cafés, restaurants, and the occasional gallery scattered throughout the Dolores Heights. The residence features a secluded outdoor seating area surrounded by more exposed timber and shaded by a mature Monterey cypress that invites nature into the living spaces, although the house is located in a densely built urban environment.

When the sun goes down, the house produces a warm glow, both from the inside and thanks to the carefully planned exterior lighting scheme that illuminates the outside stairs and sitting area, making the house a true sight to behold. §
