Report: Landon Donovan among finalists for San Jose Earthquakes coach

If Donovan takes charge of San Jose, it would mean a fantastic return for the club as he won the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003 during his four seasons on loan from German club Bayer Leverkusen. Donovan then flipped to the other side of the Cali Clasico, winning four more MLS Cups with LA Galaxy from 2005 to 2014. He also played for Everton, Bayern Munich and FC Lyon.

Donovan has been linked with major coaching jobs in Major League Soccer in the past, including last year at Real Salt Lake before then-interim coach Pablo Mastroini took the job full-time. He has brought San Diego to one playoff, and they are currently third in the USL Championship Western Conference standings.

Donovan was MLS’ all-time top scorer before being surpassed by current Earthquakes assistant coach Chris Wondolowski in May 2019. With USMNT, he’s second all-time appearances (157) and tied with Clint Dempsey to score (57).

San Jose is one of four MLS clubs currently led by a caretaker coach, and they have participated in the MLS Cup playoffs twice since 2013. They sit last (14th) in the Western Conference standings after the mid-season 2022.
