Description of the disaster

According to the Iranian Seismological Center, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the village of Sayeh Khosh near the port of Khmer in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan on July 2, 2022 at 2:02 am local time. So far, the area has been hit by 81 aftershocks (the largest being with 6.1 Richter at 03:55 local time). The affected area consists of one city and 55 villages, with a total population of about 5,318 families (22,216 people). In addition, the affected cities in the surrounding area include the port of Kamer, Kang, the port of Lengeh, Qeshm, and the Kish islands, the effects of which have been felt in Kerman and Fars provinces and some countries of the region as well. According to the emergency medical services, 84 people were injured and 5 died due to the earthquake. People in the affected areas are worried, and many are expected to be outside overnight in the following days as the aftershocks continue. Many buildings were damaged and some infrastructure was destroyed. Cracks on the walls of buildings can be seen mainly in villages near the epicenter and in the surrounding areas. The most affected villages are Koshak, Konk, Berk Sevelin, Sai Khush, Javmiri, Shadiraz, Tang Sim, Duab, Basaidu, Shah Sargi, Goran.
