Magnitude 5.7 earthquake shakes Ecuador coast, teenage dead

An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5.7 shook the coast of Ecuador, Thursday, and one person died when a teenager was electrocuted by a falling power line, Ecuadorean authorities said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of about 80 km and was centered 20 km northeast of the port of Guayaquil.

Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute said the quake was felt in most parts of the country, albeit weakly in the mountains.

Jorge Vera, mayor of Simen Bolvar canton in the coastal province of Guayas, said a 16-year-old was killed. He said a high-voltage cable fell while the victim was doing a sporting activity, but he did not give further details.
