Geologists explain why they think earthquakes keep happening

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has released a report explaining how water can play a role in sustaining earthquakes

Kershaw County, South Carolina – A group of local seismologists believe they may have narrowed the cause of recent earthquakes in Kershaw County to the Watery River.

The theory, detailed in a new report released Monday, came from geologists with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston.

They believe the initial earthquake may have allowed water from the Wateree River to seep into new fissures that opened up from the original December earthquake, which has now caused additional tremors in the area.

Scott Howard, SCDNR geologist, explains how the first earthquake changed the dynamic.

“When the first earthquake happened, maybe what it did was reset the system and it probably caused more breakage and permeability, more permeability as a result and every earthquake changes that system, so how do you relate that? Well it’s not an individual thing so it’s not like the water levels change. In the river and that causes an earthquake, it’s just that being close to the water might be a way for the water to get into the fracture system,” Howard said.

“Okay, back to the point… If you look at the history of earthquakes in the Southeast, you look at where they happen… 90% of them happen in stream valleys, and they happen where there is water,” Howard said.

William Butt, a resident of Elgin, felt at least three tremors, and said he was happy to do some research. “I’m glad someone is looking into it, we’ve all been freaked out about it here.”

Overall, Howard said, the report was to help get the information out to the public.

“We wanted to get some good geological information about the position of the geological community on these earthquakes.”

As for those who live in Kershaw County, Elgin Township plans to host Virtual Earthquake Town Hall on Wednesday, June 27.
