Google recently launched the Android Earthquake Alerts System, an earthquake sensing feature for Android phones, in Bangladesh.

How it works

The Android Earthquake Alerts System enables users to detect earthquakes around the world and send alerts to others. It can also sense nearby earthquakes using sensors in Android smartphones, using accelerometers to identify seismic activities.

The signals from the sensors are sent to the detection servers along with the coarse location of the accident scene. The information from several phones is then processed by the server to ascertain the proximity and intensity of the earthquake.

The feature also provides users with quick and easily accessible information derived from Google search. When someone types “earthquakes,” “earthquake near me,” or similar terms into a Google search, relevant helpful results and resources will be available immediately.

There are two ways to send alerts – via the search option and by sending an alert directly on the user’s Android device.

There will also be tips on what to do during and after an earthquake. Users close to the epicenter can also find crowdsourcing feedback and a special alert card when they look for earthquakes near them.

The feature is completely free to use.

Android smartphones display two types of earthquake alerts, depending on their size and intensity. Those who do not wish to receive such alerts can also turn them off in the settings of their smartphone device.

Be aware to alert people when earthquakes occur with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale, or an intensity level of 3 or 4 on the MMI scale. The notification is sent with the distance of the epicenter. The alert uses the phone’s current volume, vibration, and Do Not Disturb settings.

Take Action is a full-screen alert for earthquakes greater than 4.5, or intensity level 5 and above on the MMI scale. To help people prepare for possible severe vibration, instructions are displayed in full screen and the phone plays a loud sound.

Android Earthquake Alerts System was first introduced in New Zealand and Greece. It is now available in more countries including Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Philippines, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United States and Uzbekistan.
