The UK has recorded a record temperature above 40C for the first time, raising concerns about the impact of global climate change. Thermometers had a temperature of 40.3 C in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, and dozens of other places exceeded the previous highest temperature of 38.7 C in the UK. Firefighters have declared major incidents after the fires. Some rail services were canceled after the railroad overheated or crumbled and the overhead cables failed. Stephen Belcher, head of science and technology at the Met Office, said it was “almost impossible” to exceed 40C in the UK in an uninterrupted climate. However, global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions became more common in extreme temperatures. The world has already warmed by about 1.1 C since the beginning of the industrial era and climate scientists say temperatures will continue to rise unless governments around the world reduce emissions.
