The murder of Deborah Samuel, accused of blasphemy, has sparked a debate in Nigeria over its blasphemy laws. Deborah Samuel, a 21-year-old Christian university student in northern Nigeria, was beaten to death after a WhatsApp voicemail was accused of blasphemy. Blasphemy laws have long been controversial in the country. Although Nigeria’s laws are not based on any religion, 12 states in the Muslim-majority north have Islamic courts that make blasphemy a crime punishable by death.
