Pamplin Media Group – Felt a small earthquake in the Western metro area on Sunday

Residents of Beaverton, Hillsboro, Sherwood and Aloha told the USGS they were shocked.

An earthquake shook the Portland metro area Sunday night, the US Geological Survey said.

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded between Hillsboro and Aloha at 1:43 am on July 24. The US Geological Survey said this earthquake was at a depth of about 10.8 miles.

Scott Burns, a professor of geology at Portland State University, told KOIN 6 News that the quake was likely a move on a previously unidentified deep fault there.

Residents in several cities across the region — including Beaverton, Hillsboro and Sherwood — reported to the USGS that they felt the earthquake. The quake rumbled across the Oregon and Washington border, with many people in Vancouver reporting they felt earthquakes.

“Earthquakes like this are rare in the Portland area – they remind us that we are an earthquake country,” Burns added.

Another earthquake was reported off the coast of Oregon at 2:22 a.m. Sunday. This earthquake was recorded as having a magnitude of 4.0 and was about 244 miles west of Kos Bay.

As of 10 a.m. Sunday, the USGS said only one person in Kos Bay had reported feeling this quake.

Earthquakes are unrelated, Burns said.
