Nepal: 4.1-magnitude earthquake hits the country

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on Monday in the early hours of this morning.

The earthquake occurred 21 km northeast of Nagarkot, Nepal. The epicenter was at a depth of 10.0 km, and was located at 27.907 degrees north latitude and 85,573 degrees east longitude.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that “a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck 21 km northeast of Nagarkot, Nepal at 5.52 am today”.

The recent earthquakes in Nepal, which caused unprecedented damage to life and property, necessitated the demand for well-framed policy measures to manage such disasters.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck central Nepal – between its capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara – on 25 April 2015. It is estimated that 8,964 people were killed and nearly 22,000 injured.

The earthquake, known as the Gorkha earthquake, also shook several cities in northern India. Tremors were also felt in Lahore, Pakistan, Lhasa (in Tibet), and Dhaka (in Bangladesh). In the aftermath of the earthquake, Kathmandu International Airport was closed.

The earthquake also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing 22 people.

A major follower occurred on May 12, 2015, with its epicenter near the Chinese border between Kathmandu and Mount Everest. It is estimated that more than 200 people were killed in this powerful aftershock, and more than 2,500 people were injured.

Nepal suffered the worst earthquake ever recorded in 1934. It devastated the cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, with a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale.

It is established that the Indian plate is submerged under the Eurasian plate at a rate of 5 cm per year. This is responsible for the formation and increase in height of the Small Himalayas, but it also makes the region vulnerable to earthquakes.
