More aftershocks are expected after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the northern Philippines

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippines, forcing people to flee buildings in the capital, Manila.

Key points: The earthquake hit 10 kilometers underground, some areas have reported landslides, and a tremor was felt more than 430 kilometers away in Manila, the Philippines is located along the Pacific Ring, making it vulnerable to earthquakes.

Officials said that hospitals and homes were evacuated, but there were no reports of injuries from the strong earthquake, which was centered around a mountainous area in Abra governorate.

Revlin Villamor, the mayor of Lagangelang in Apra County, said the town was without power because the supply was automatically cut “due to danger”.

“We are still suffering from the aftershocks,” said Mr. Villamor.

“We have received reports of damage to homes, but so far there have been no injuries,” he added.

The Abra Regional Hospital was also damaged, with a gap in the front entrance wall near the ceiling.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered rescue and relief teams to be dispatched immediately to the area, and announced that he would fly to the epicenter.

Scientists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology say there have already been a number of aftershocks, with more expected.

The intense vibration caused cracks in businesses and homes and was felt by people in the capital, Manila, more than 430 km away.

Congressman Eric Singson told DZMM radio that the quake lasted about 30 seconds.

“I thought my house was going to fall,” said Mr. Singson.

“Now we are trying to reach people. Right now there are consequences to that we are outside our home.”

Some towns closest to the quake have reported landslides. No tsunami warning was issued.

The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.0, at a depth of 10 km.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of faults around the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.

It is also subject to about 20 hurricanes and tropical storms each year, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale killed nearly 2,000 people in the northern Philippines in 1990.
