Philippines earthquake death toll rises, dozens injured

An earthquake measuring at least 7.0 degrees killed at least in the northern Philippines, Wednesday, toppling buildings and shaking tall towers more than 300 km away in the capital, Manila.

The shallow but powerful quake hit the sparsely populated mountainous Abra county on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 am (0043 GMT), after initially measuring 6.8, the US Geological Survey said.

Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deeper earthquakes.

Police Major Edwin Sergio told AFP in Dolores, who felt the strength of the quake, that people ran in panic outside their buildings and windows of the local market were shattered.

“The earthquake was very strong,” Sergio said, adding that there were minor cracks in the police station building.

Also, vegetables and fruits sold in the market were separated after the tables fell.”

A video posted on Facebook and verified by AFP showed cracks in the asphalt road and land in the nearby town of Bangweed, but no visible damage to shops or homes.

Police chief Major Nazarino Emiya told AFP that several people were injured in Banguid and taken to hospital for treatment.

College student Mira Zapata was at home in San Juan when she felt “a really strong tremor.”

“We started screaming and rushed out,” she said as the aftershocks continued.

“Our house is fine but the houses down the hill are damaged.”

In 1990, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the northern Philippines caused a land fault extending more than a hundred kilometers.

The death toll was estimated to be over 1,200 and caused extensive damage to buildings in Manila.

The country’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology holds regular earthquake drills to simulate scenarios in the country’s active fault lines.

During major earthquakes, people will find it difficult to stand on the upper floors, trees may shake violently, heavy objects and furniture may collapse and large church bells may ring, the agency said.
