Strong earthquake strikes northern Philippines
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippines on Wednesday, killing one person, smashing windows in the epicenter and shaking tall towers more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) away in the capital, Manila, authorities said.
The US Geological Survey said a shallow but powerful earthquake struck the sparsely populated mountainous region of Apra on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 am (0043 GMT).
Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deeper earthquakes.
A 25-year-old construction worker in La Trinidad, the capital of the landlocked Benguet province, died when the three-story building he was working in collapsed, police said. Seven other workers escaped unharmed.
Police Major Edwin Sergio told AFP in Dolores municipality in Abra, which felt the full force of the quake, that people rushed out of their homes and shops and windows of the local market were shattered.
“The earthquake was very strong,” Sergio said, adding that there were small cracks in the police station building.
The arrangement of vegetables and fruits sold in the market has also been disrupted after the tables have fallen.
A video posted on Facebook and verified by AFP showed cracks in the asphalt road and ground in the nearby provincial capital, Banguid, although there were no visible damages to homes or shops.
But police chief Major Nazarino Emia told AFP that several of the injured in Banguid had been taken to hospital.
Some of the buildings here have cracks. The electricity was cut off and the internet was cut off as well.
Congressman Cheng Bernos, who represents the single district of Apra, said the quake “caused damage to many homes and institutions,” but did not elaborate.
College student Mira Zapata was at her home in San Juan City when she felt “a really strong tremor.”
“We started screaming and ran outside,” she said, as the aftershocks continued.
“Our house is fine but the houses down the hill are damaged.”
ring of fire
The Philippines is regularly rocked by earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.
Wednesday’s earthquake was the strongest in the Philippines in years.
“Some of our people were pruning branches, so they had to go down immediately after they felt the shaking too much,” Pangasinan County Sheriff Colonel Richmond Tadina said.
In the city of Vigan, in the nearby province of Ilocos Sur, old buildings built during the Spanish colonial period have been damaged.
Video footage verified on Facebook showed the collapse of the Pantai Bell Tower in the popular tourist destination.
“We cannot rule out the possibility of another strong earthquake,” said Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
His press secretary, Trixie Cruz-Angeles, said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose family stronghold is in the north, is expected to visit the affected area once it is safe.
There were reports of landslides in some areas. National Disaster Agency spokesman Mark Timball said road clearance operations were underway.
He added that there were no reports of damage to dams in the area.
In October 2013, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Bohol in the central Philippines, killing more than 200 people and causing landslides.
Old churches in the birthplace of Catholicism in the Philippines have been badly damaged. Nearly 400,000 were displaced and tens of thousands of homes were damaged.
The strong earthquake altered the landscape of the island and pushed the “earth rupture” to a stretch of land by about three metres, creating a wall of rocks above the epicenter.
In 1990, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the northern Philippines caused a land fault extending more than a hundred kilometers.
The death toll was estimated to be over 1,200 and caused extensive damage to buildings in Manila.
The country’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology holds regular earthquake drills to simulate scenarios in the country’s active fault lines. – France Press agency

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
