Philippines: 7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Luzon island

At least four people were killed after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the Philippine island of Luzon on Wednesday, damaging a hospital and buildings and sending powerful earthquakes across the capital, Manila.

A 25-year-old man was killed by falling debris, when the quake struck about 11 kilometers southeast of the town of Dolores at a depth of 10 kilometers, said Joy Byrnos, deputy governor of the city of Abra.

The quake was caused by movement in a local fault at a depth of 25 km, the authorities said, adding that they expect more aftershocks.

A construction worker has died after being hit by debris in the mountainous town of La Trinidad in Benguet County. Several roads were cut off by landslides and boulders.

Five people were injured when stones collided with their cars and trucks in nearby Mountain County.

Officials said a hospital in Abra governorate was evacuated after the building partially collapsed, but there were no injuries. Several houses collapsed and others had cracks in the walls in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Abra.

Bernos shared photos of the damaged hospital on her social media account, which showed a large hole in the front entrance facade.

“We are still witnessing aftershocks. We have received reports of damage to homes. But so far there have been no injuries,” said the mayor of Lagangilang town in Ibra. He added that the power was cut automatically to avoid any danger.

Abra, a landlocked province in the northern Philippines, is inhabited by approximately 250 thousand people.

Newly elected President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered that rescue and relief teams be dispatched immediately to the earthquake-affected province of Abra. He is also expected to fly to the quake-hit province to assess the situation.

“Despite the sad reports of the damage caused by the earthquake, we are ensuring a swift response to those in need and those affected by this disaster,” Marcus Jr. said on Facebook.

The president said he was in his office at the Malacanang presidential palace when the chandeliers started swinging. “He was very strong.”

In Manila, many buildings were evacuated, and some people were forced to flee from the 30th floor.

“The floor shook as if I was on a hammock and the lights suddenly went out. We rushed out of the office, I heard screaming and some of my companions were crying,” Michael Bryants, a safety officer in the town of Abra in Lagangelang, near the epicenter, told The Associated Press.

“It was the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt and I thought the Earth would open up.”

Strong aftershocks are expected, said Renato Solidum, director of the state seismological agency.

The focus of attention is on Abra and the neighboring governorates. “It is a big earthquake,” Mr. Solidum told DZRH radio station, adding that landslides have been reported in some parts of Abra, particularly in the city of Manabo.

“The earthquake lasted 30 seconds or more. I thought my house was going to fall,” Congressman Eric Singson told the radio station.

“Right now, we’re trying to reach people… at the moment there are aftershocks so we’re out of our house.”

The Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and has experienced some of the most severe earthquakes in the world.

In 1990, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake killed nearly 2,000 people in the northern Philippines.
