There is no danger of a tsunami after two 4+ earthquakes off the island of Hawaii within an hour

No tsunami threat to Hawaii after another 4+ earthquake was reported off the island of Hawaii within an hour of the previous earthquake in the area.

This latest earthquake was measured with an initial magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, and was located at Mount Camaihuacanaloa (formerly known as Loihi), south of the Big Island. The earthquake was reported at 6:28 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2022.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that no tsunami is expected from either event.

“This second earthquake is a relatively shallow earthquake that occurred in the vicinity of the Kamaʻehukanaloa earthquake swarm from July 16-18 and may represent a pressure release associated with this event. There is no indication that this is related to the resurgence of molten rock activity,” said Ken Hoon, the scientist in charge. About HVO in a media statement: “It is also unusual for two moderate earthquakes to occur so close and in close proximity, but there is no clear relationship between the two events.”

A previous 4.3 earthquake was reported at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in the SWF fault zone of the Kīlauea volcano on the island of Hawaii, about 30 miles north of the second unrelated quake.

The USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported that the first earthquake was part of a seismic swarm under the Pahala region, which has been ongoing since 2019. Earthquakes have been observed in this region at least since the 1960s, according to HVO.

No tsunami danger for Hawaii after a 4.3 (4.1) earthquake was reported at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in the fault zone in the southwest of the Kolawea volcano on the island of Hawaii.

The USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory reports that this earthquake is part of a seismic swarm under the Pahala region, which has been ongoing since 2019. Earthquakes have been observed in this area at least since the 1960s, according to HVO.

HVO reports that the earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says no tsunami is expected, but some areas may have experienced shaking.

Within the first 20 minutes of the earthquake, “hair reports” were recorded at multiple locations on the island of Hawaii. The quake was also felt in Kola, Maui, according to reports provided to the US Geological Survey.

HVO reports that there were 130 reports that were felt within the first half hour of the earthquake.
