Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes Philippines

A massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook the northern Philippines on Wednesday morning, prompting people to seek shelter and killing at least five residents.

The epicenter was on the island of Luzon, but the US Geological Survey said the quake was felt hundreds of miles away in the country’s capital, Manila.

According to the Civil Defense Office, at least five people were killed, and more than 60 were injured.

Officials reported that hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged during the quake, whose epicenter was only about 6 miles underground.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the northern Philippines on Wednesday.

Witnesses captured video of the astonishing moments in which pieces of the historic bell tower smashed onto passersby below.

The Bantay Belfry Tower is said to have been built in 1591 and originally served to help alert the city of approaching enemies.

Officials said several other sites were damaged, including Vigan Cathedral and a local hospital.

The disaster is a first for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who took office less than a month ago.

“We continue to coordinate with each agency as well as with local offices to ensure that disaster victims need immediate assistance,” Marcus said.

Disasters such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are frequent in the Philippines.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology says more than 100 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 4 affect the island nation annually.

The US Geological Survey reports that 11 earthquakes greater than 6.5 have occurred in the same area since 1971.
