Pakistan: Successive earthquakes hit rain-hit Balochistan

Two consecutive “moderate” earthquakes struck off the coast near Pasni amid heavy rainfall in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Sunday.

According to the National Seismological Center, the first 5.6-magnitude quake occurred at 6:42 p.m., and was 60 km deep, 63.62 east longitude and 25.21 north latitude, Dunn said.

The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 5, occurred 10 minutes later at 6:52 pm and was at a depth of 30 km. Its longitude was 63.54 east and latitude 25.12 north.

It was not clear if there were any casualties or damage to infrastructure.

The earthquakes come at a time when Balochistan is experiencing floods caused by heavy monsoon rains.

Intermittent rains continued to engulf most of Balochistan on Sunday, as authorities scrambled to rescue thousands displaced by floods in more than a dozen provinces, Dawn reported.

Rainfall was reported in Kalat, Shaman, Ziarat, Muslim Bagh, Sibi, Mastung, Dalbadin, Khuzdar, Lasbela and Barkhan in the last 24 hours.

According to the provincial disaster management authority, at least 127 people have died in rains and floods in the county since June 1.

Some of these deaths have been reported in parts of the province in the past 24 hours.
