An earthquake swarm shakes the I-20 corridor | Progressive Magazine

A study by geologists from the South Carolina Department of Geological Survey of Natural Resources, the University of South Carolina, and the College of Charleston determined that the 20 Interstate Highway between Elgin and Logoff experienced an earthquake swarm, with greater earthquake magnitudes than in previous swarms observed in Carolina Southern.

So far, the five largest earthquakes from this swarm are in the range of 3.3 to 3.6 on the Richter scale, which is to be expected during a swarm of earthquakes. Earthquakes are measured on a scale from 0 to 10.

As of July 5, more than 56 earthquakes have been identified along the I-20 corridor between Elgin and Lugoff since December 27, 2021.

“The unusually long earthquake – seven months – in the Midlands has led to a lot of questions and speculation,” said state geologist Scott Howard of the SCGS.

Among the geologists’ meals:

• Earthquake swarms – groups of earthquakes that occur close in time and space and of similar magnitude – are common and have occurred in South Carolina before. While the latter swarm is unusual in its duration, location, and relatively higher values, it is not unexpected.
