Oil company settles class action lawsuit over 2016 Pawnee earthquake | News

Eagle Road Oil, LLC has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit arising from the September 2016 Pawnee earthquake.

The $850,000 settlement agreement was approved in Pawnee County Court.

Eagle Road, along with several other oil companies, was named as a defendant “allegedly contributing to causing earthquakes near Pawnee, Oklahoma and occurring during the period of collective settlement”, due to the operation of sewage disposal wells in the area in accordance with Poynter’s Law A group representing the plaintiffs.

“The settlement resolves any and all claims allegedly arising against Eagle Road seismicity between November 15, 2014, effective date with epicenters within a 50-mile radius of Pawnee, Oklahoma, including but not limited to the 5.8 m earthquake near Pawnee 3, 2016, and a 5.0 m earthquake near Cushing on November 6, 2016,” Poynter said in a statement. “Eagle Road denies and denies all allegations made by the Plaintiff. The lawsuit against the remaining Defendants, Cummings Oil, Territory Resources, LLC, and EnerVest Operating, LLC (“Non-Settled Defendants”) will continue.”

The Pawnee earthquake at the time was considered the largest in the state’s history, causing a range of damage in and around Pawnee and Pine counties. The quake was felt in at least six states, according to the US Geological Survey, hitting around 7:01 a.m. At least one infection was reported to the news agency.

The earthquake led to new restrictions on wastewater disposal wells. Oklahoma has seen a significant decrease in the number and intensity of earthquakes since those restrictions were put in place.

The lawsuit was filed in December 2016 in Pawnee County.
