An earthquake in Bukit Batok? That’s just the sound of subway trains, Singapore news
Imagine that you freak out from your wits every five minutes at work.
No, it has nothing to do with the supernatural encounters in this Ghost Hungry month nor the aftershocks from the earthquake, but the situation that some store staff at the Bukit Batok bus junction had to deal with when a subway train pulls into the station.
A 76-year-old employee told the Xinmin Daily News that the frequent loud noises, said to sound like thunder or earthquake deals, got on her nerves.
She described being so shaken by sudden tremors that she was unable to focus on her job. At times, she found herself offering clients the wrong change.
“During peak hours in the morning and evening, frequency [of the noise] “It’s louder than that and it gives me a headache,” she said.
The employee, who has been working at the Bukit Batok bus junction for nearly two years, said noise levels were still acceptable in the past, but appeared to have intensified recently.
The nine-hour ordeal she goes through every day made her wonder if the problem was with the train tracks.
Another area worker spoken to by the Shin Min Daily News agreed that the noise level at the bus intersection was unbearable, especially during rush hours when trains come and go every two minutes.
She, too, will worry every time that happens if the train derails.
The 25-year-old employee said: “I am still young and can still bear [the noise]but the older colleagues are having a more difficult time.”
The Shin Min Daily News said they had conducted a decibel meter test at Bukit Batok train station along the North-South Line from Jurong East to Marina South Pier.
It found that the noise generated whenever a train passed through the station usually reached between 82.97 and 84.55 decibels, with the loudest reaching 89.6 decibels.
The noise usually lasts for 15 seconds each time a train comes in, at a rate of one train every five minutes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, any noise above 70 decibels over a long period of time can begin to damage one’s hearing.
In particular, equipment such as gas-powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers that emit noise levels between 80 and 85 decibels can cause hearing damage two hours after exposure.
A passerby the Xinmin Daily News spoke to noted that noise levels get particularly bad when one is at a bus intersection, but not when walking between a subway station and a bus interchange.
He suggested that putting in soundproof panels might help solve the problem. Another person the China Evening Daily spoke to said he noticed that the noise had only gotten worse this year.
In response to the comments, SMRT told the Xinmin Daily News that its employees are currently carrying out checks to ensure the noise generated is within safety limits. They also said that track maintenance procedures are underway.
