Legal settlement saves money for two Oklahoma towns hit by the 2016 earthquake – FOX23 News

Cushing, Oklahoma. A legal settlement unlocked funds for two earthquake-ravaged Oklahoma towns in late 2016.

Cushing was affected by an earthquake that closed businesses and destroyed homes. Now, a legal settlement with the oil company will return the money to the local population.

“The earthquake hit and really crashed into a parapet wall of the building next door,” said Jeffrey Beasley, owner of the company.

If you know where to look, you can still see the damage.

“The movie theater has been vacant and unrenovated for months and months,” Beasley said.

Beasley owns Dunkin’ Theater which took a big hit. He bought it several months after the hit and is now seeing the fruits of his labor.

“It was a huge three-plus year renovation, so we opened last year in 2021,” Beasley said.

Now, the Pawnee County Court has signed a class-action settlement with earthquakes near Cushing and Pawnee in 2016 and 2017. It was accessed with Eagle Road Oil LLC for $850,000 and is now available to Cushing residents.

The company denies all allegations that wastewater disposal wells played a role in the earthquakes.

“There are some businesses that I think may still be closed as a result because the damage has been so significant,” said Jeff Kohn, Payne County emergency manager.

Kuhn was around the clock on the day of the earthquake in Cushing and people remember at the Cimmaron Tower in the center of town.

“This building was so badly damaged that we had to move them, and we had to make a shelter for them,” Cohen said.

In the past few weeks, there have been some small tremors underground.

“We’ve had a few tremors, so these things always cause an increased sense of alertness for us,” said Terry Brannon, Cushing City Manager.

Although a settlement was reached against one company, the lawsuit will continue with Cummings Oil Company, Territory Resources LLC and EnerVest Operating LLC.
