Magnitude 5.1 earthquake from Sunda Strait shakes Pandeglang

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck parts of Banten on the afternoon of August 5, 2022, at 16:23 West Indonesia Time (WIB). The epicenter of the quake was in the sea, 101 km southwest of Shimangu in Pandeglang.

The tremor was felt on a modified Mercalli intensity scale (MMI) II-III.

The acting head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, reported that the earthquake, which originated in the southern region of the Sunda Strait, occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers.

“This is a shallow earthquake caused by an active sea floor fault on the Eurasian plate (internal earthquake),” he said in a written statement.

Based on the estimated Shakemap, vibration can be felt in Cimanggu, Sumur, Cibitung and Pandeglang. So far, the agency has not received any reports of damage from the earthquake, which is not likely to cause a tsunami.

As of 16:41 WIB, BMKG has not registered any aftershocks. Dariono asked residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unfounded issues. People also suggest avoiding cracked buildings.
