Earthquake shakes Binga – Bulawayo 24 News

An earthquake hit the Binga region at about five thirty in the morning yesterday.

Binga experienced similar earthquakes two months ago, after a 4.3-magnitude earthquake shook the region.

The Meteorological Services Department’s (MSD) chief of meteorology, James Ngoma, confirmed the earthquake to Newsday.

Noting that MSD was still trying to find out more details about the epicenter and its magnitude, Nujoma said, “What we’ve discovered so far is that it happened at 5:30 a.m. near the Binga area.”

Since Lake Kariba, the largest man-made lake in the world, began filling in the early 1960s, the area around the lake has experienced several earthquakes.

Meanwhile, the Zambezi River Authority said that Kariba was safe from tremors.

In a statement last Friday, ZRA CEO Munyaradze Monodov said: “We would like to reassure the public and those who live in and around the affected areas that tremors of this magnitude are not expected to affect the structural integrity of the Kariba Dam.

“We further confirm that there were no unusual observations from inspections conducted on the morning of August 3, 2022 or from analysis of dam safety data collected from several instruments monitoring Thedam’s behaviour.”

On August 2, 2022, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in Lake Kariba and its surroundings at 2203 hours.

MSD said the epicenter was about 50 kilometers south of the Kariba Dam wall near Bumi Hills.

In the past 12 months, two earthquakes of the same magnitude and several others of smaller size have occurred south of the Kariba Dam.
