McGill supports the new Seismica magazine to get access to diamonds

The McGill Library has launched a new journal that will allow the latest earthquake research to spread globally. The journal Seismica was launched on July 1, with a public call for researchers to submit their research. McGill University assists the magazine by operating the information technology platform behind the website.

Seismica will publish original and new peer-reviewed research in seismology, seismology, and related disciplines. The new journal initiative began about two years ago when a group of seismologists felt the need to change the way the publishing system worked, especially in light of recent technological advances. Since then, more than 100 seismologists from around the world have come together to undertake the monumental task of preparing the journal, such as setting editorial policies, IT platform, journal branding, publishing templates, reviewer database, and marketing. This initiative comes from a movement of other journals specializing in volcanoes, tectonics and sediments. Seismica strives to be accessible, transparent, respectful, credible and progressive.

Professor Kristi Rowe, Canada President for Research in Seismic Geology, and Executive Editor of the Seismica Society said, “Seismica is a community-driven, dedicated seismology-driven, all-volunteer-run, open-access diamond journal. Articles are free to publish and read for free, without a subscription, and the authors retain full copyright.”

Seismica aims to attract not only academics and researchers alike but also the industry that plays an important role in this field of study. “It is critical that the latest information is freely shared,” said Jessica Lange, science communications librarian. “However, large sections of global research are either hidden behind a paywall for publishers or made public by charging authors thousands of dollars they have to pay using public research funds. The McGill Library wants to support accessible global research. especially when it comes to issues of risk and preparedness such as earthquakes.”

Seismica has an ongoing invitation for reviewers to subscribe to the journal database, for volunteers to help run the journal, and for scholars to submit their research. Interested persons are requested to register on the Seismica website.
