Two earthquakes shook things up in Washington County on Thursday

Two 2.8-magnitude earthquakes were recorded in Washington County on Thursday, according to reports from the US Geological Survey.

According to two reports from the US Geological Survey (USGS), two earthquakes of magnitude 2.8 occurred approximately 12 hours apart on Thursday.

The first earthquake struck at 7:30 a.m. four kilometers west/northwest of Jonesboro, according to the US Geological Survey.

The second quake struck at 7:10 p.m. four kilometers east of Centerville, according to the US Geological Survey.

No damages or injuries reported.

So what can you normally expect from a 2.8 magnitude earthquake like two outside Jonesboro and Centerville?

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes usually only cause damage when they are in the 4-5 range. However, differences in soil composition, building construction, and distance from the earthquake can affect the results.

Thursday’s two earthquakes were recorded as the ninth and tenth earthquakes felt in Maine this year, according to the Maine Geological Survey.

Prior to Thursday, the last earthquake recorded as felt by Maine residents was on May 23 with a magnitude of 2.2 near Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, with reports from York, Maine.
