‘I thought it was an earthquake’ – Witnesses share details of a Missouri house explosion | News

WHITE, Missouri – A man was killed and nine people were injured after a house exploded on Pecan Street in White, Missouri early Monday morning. Capt. Barry Morgan, Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, says the explosion was gas related.

The ages of the victims range from 6 months to adults. Firefighters investigate the explosion to determine the exact cause.

“Suddenly there was a boom! I thought it was an earthquake,” Virginia Bowles said. She lives next door to the house that blew up.

When the Bulls came out, she was greeted with a sight she’ll never forget. Flames erupted from the damaged house, and flames began to spread to her garage. Bowles saw the victims shortly after the house exploded.

“It’s just heartbreaking to me. Little girls what happened to me, but I saw a baby, a baby—they said he was 6 months old—and he was crying. My niece kept it,” said Bowles. “And then, there were some little shavers like this, and no doubt they burned out.”

Tyler Larkins, Philip Swift and their friends were sitting outside on a Monday morning on Hickory Street, all the way from the blast. They heard screams and ran quickly down the road to help.

“We could smell the fire before we got there, and when we got there it was hell and it was bad,” Swift explained.

Larkins ran home before he collapsed.

“When I first got to the window, there was a 4-year-old in there,” Larkins said. “She was really really practical to the window, and I pulled her out.” “By then, I could see, really, just smoke, but I looked under the smoke,” Larkins said. And I saw another kid, and he was looking for someone to hold him, you know? She was going in circles and I didn’t know what to do, so I ran inside and pulled her out.”

Swift and Larkins are grateful that they both sat outside to hear the explosion.

“If we hadn’t heard the explosion, and there had been some screaming afterwards, we wouldn’t have gotten there as quickly as we did,” Larkins said.

“This house had already fallen. It could have been worse than it was. The kids would have gone,” Swift added.

A gas commission was also appointed to investigate this explosion.
