The earthquake destroyed a long-standing problem for isolated farmers in eastern Victoria

Trucks’ access to farms has been restricted in a remote part of Gippsland, with an earthquake-damaged road yet to be repaired.

Key points: Jamison Likola Road was damaged by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake last year. Farmers say the detour is dangerous and has hampered their ability to get trucks to their property.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck between Lykola and Mansfield in September last year.

It damaged the Jamison-Likola road, which was exacerbated by heavy rain.

Vehicles traveling north of Likola must detour via Target Creek Trail, a one-lane gravel road. Locals say it gets muddy and slippery in wet weather.

Anthony Higgins farms in Glencairn, north of Likola. He says he cannot deliver large quantities of fuel to his property due to the road closure.

“[The fuel company] He thinks Target Creek Trail is too dangerous to show up in wet water, so I had to buy a slip unit that cost a few thousand dollars,” said Mr. Higgins.

“I have to meet them at Licola now and fill up my small 400L diesel tank and take this home to my fuel supply while they were before they came straight home.

“It’s just another arrangement that takes a long time.”

Higgins says he also has animal welfare concerns, as large cattle trucks cannot reach his property.

He said the cattle should be transported from his property to Licola on a Chinese truck, and then moved to a larger truck with a trailer for the next trip.

“You do double-take on cattle,” Higgins said. “It takes more time and an extra burden on the cattle carriers.”

“Target Creek Road…once it gets a little wet you can probably get a four-wheel drive in there, but the car slips everywhere and a truck, even a Chinese truck, can’t get up there wet with the load because it’s so tight.”

Dane Martin operates Glenfalloch Station, a large property in Licola that has commercial relationships with other land holdings in northeastern Victoria.

The road closure also made it difficult to move livestock from Glenvaloch northward.

“It is very dangerous for a small single lane track to go up the bottom of the affected road, especially when we have tourists over Easter,” said Mr. Martin.

“It is a very busy area and I am sure people can appreciate that it is very dangerous and slippery.

Wellington Shire Council expects work on Jamison Likola Road to be completed by mid-2023.

A spokesperson said the road was closed due to safety concerns and would require expert advice due to the steep terrain.
