Gonzalez will remain with the USMNT during the Qatar 2022 World Cup and officially take over after the tournament ends in December, making him responsible for the MLS club for the 2023 campaign. He has been an assistant to the USMNT since December 2021, helping them navigate the CONCACAF qualifiers and entry into Group B along side With England, Iran and Wales.

San Jose parted ways with Argentine coach Matias Almeida in April, with Alex Covelo leading the team as interim coach since then after previously leading the MLS NEXT Pro team.

Team Quakes are second from the bottom in the Western Conference standings, which puts them on track to miss the Audi MLS Cup qualifiers for the second year in a row. Nine games left in their 2022 campaign (5W-11L-9D record; 24 points).

Gonzalez, 42, was a former manager of FC Dallas from 2019 until September 2021. He led the club to the playoffs in its first two seasons before leaving at the end of the third season.

Prior to leading the FCD first team, Gonzalez was the club’s academy director. He originally joined FC Dallas in 2012 as an academy coach. Known for his player development approach, he helps guide the young Dallas team while playing catchy football.

San Jose has had one of the most successful youth development streaks in recent years, led by local striker Cady Coyle and a young crop that includes midfielder Cruz Medina. They have routinely put local talent into the national youth teams in recent years and aim to capitalize on that with Gonzalez’s background.
