One year after the devastating earthquake, more than 250,000 children in southwest Haiti cannot reach adequate schools – UNICEF – Haiti
Les Cayes, Haiti, 16 August 2022 – One year after a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Haiti, UNICEF warned, three weeks before the start of the new school year, that more than 250,000 children are unable to access adequate schools. .
The reconstruction process, which has been delayed due to insecurity and lack of funds, is still ongoing and may take years to complete. Of the 1,250 schools destroyed or damaged by the earthquake, most have yet to be reconstructed.
“Schools are more than places to learn, they are a safe haven for children traumatized by a cascade of events: the COVID-19 pandemic, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, and rampant insecurity and poverty,” said Bruno Maes, UNICEF Representative in Haiti. “Too many children will not be able to access appropriate educational services in the next school year, receive appropriate health care services, drink safe water, or have a fair chance to grow and develop to their fullest potential.”
On August 14, 2021, a massive earthquake struck the counties of South, Nieps and Grand Anse, killing 2,200 people and injuring another 12,200. 1,250 schools, 97 health facilities, and 55 water systems were destroyed or damaged, leaving more than 340,000 children without adequate educational conditions and 800,000 people without access to health care, drinking water, or hygiene services.
Despite the challenging environment and limited funding, UNICEF has reconstructed or rehabilitated 234 classrooms. UNICEF also provided school kits to 74,000 students. In addition, nearly 100 high-performance tents have been erected in the affected schools. More than 31,000 students in Grand Anse, Nippes and the South have been able to catch up with studies through booster classes.
UNICEF and its partners worked to provide essential services to affected women and children, yet operations were often delayed or hampered by a lack of resources and gang-related violence.
UNICEF has repaired 22 drinking water systems damaged by the natural disaster, reaching 440,000 people, nearly half of the target population. 23,000 hygiene kits, including soap, household water treatment products and menstrual hygiene products, were distributed to serve 121,000 people.
Throughout the year, more than 23,700 children benefited from psychosocial and recreational activities in 75 UNICEF-supported child-friendly spaces. At least 1,100 survivors of gender-based violence received psychological and medical care, while 18 separated and unaccompanied children benefited from alternative care services and were reunited with their families.
UNICEF provided integrated health care and nutrition services to 52,000 people, including 15,800 children, across mobile clinics. In addition, 4,800 children under the age of five were treated for moderate or severe acute malnutrition.
Efforts are underway to reach an additional 12,300 people with basic health services and 15,000 wasted children through quality care. UNICEF urgently needs additional funding to accelerate its health and nutrition response. So far, only 1.4 percent of the population has been vaccinated against COVID-19, well short of the national target.
To support the most vulnerable hard-hit by the earthquake, UNICEF is also providing additional income to vulnerable families through multipurpose cash transfers, which have reached nearly 1,000 this year. This money helps families access basic services.
UNICEF also produced 10,000 posters and 60,000 brochures on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) to add to the toolkits that were distributed to affected populations. More than 3,000 people received information about PSEA and available feedback mechanisms, while 60 community leaders and 30 coaches were trained to inform their communities in Niépce, Grand Anse and the south. 10 radio stations have been contracted to broadcast PSEA websites and programs for six months and 450 Haitian U-Report reporters have been trained in PSEA to inform their communities.
At the end of 2021, UNICEF requested $97 million through the 2022 Children’s Humanitarian Appeal to reach 950,000 people, including 520,000 children in Haiti. To date, UNICEF has received only 30 per cent of the funding needed to meet the basic health, education, nutrition and protection needs of Haitian children. Without urgent funding of $64.6 million, UNICEF will not be able to assist Haiti’s most vulnerable.
