He said analysis of GPS measurements of crustal deformation suggested “strong seismic coupling” under the Garhwal-Kumaon region. The strong inter-plate coupling means that the fault under the Garhwal-Kumaon clip is “closed” and capable of stress buildup. The width of the double zone, according to the report, is estimated at 85 kilometers.
The researchers claimed that this highly conjugated region must have accumulated a “slip” of more than 7 meters since the last earthquake in 1505 “enough to cause a major earthquake in the region.” Slippage is the relative displacement of previously adjacent points on either side of an error.
According to their report, GPS measurements found that this part of the Himalayas has a rate of convergence of about 18 mm annually which has been going on for more than 500 years – making this slice of the geological fault “one of the most earthquake-prone parts of the world” . Himalayan Arch.”
The authors say that the network of GPS locations in the Garhwal Himalayas, the densest anywhere along the Himalayan arc, “provides the most reliable estimate of the spatial variations of location velocities in the Himalayas”.
“The coupling map derived from GPS measurements has implications for seismic hazards in the Garhwal-Kumaon region,” the report says, adding that areas of high coupling will be regions of high seismic energy release during future earthquakes.
“If we take the analogy from the 2015 Gorka earthquake and the 1985 Mexico earthquake, sediment-filling valleys, such as the Dehradun Valley in the Garhwal region, are expected to be the areas likely to experience more damage in future events.”
This has serious implications in terms of seismic hazards, the report says, “as population densities are higher in the frontal Himalayas and adjacent Indo-Gangetic plains, exposing more people to near-field ground shaking.”
Besides, unconsolidated sediments in the Indo-Gangetic plains can cause more structural damage during earthquakes and also liquefaction – where saturated soil behaves more like a liquid than a solid – as happened in the 1934 earthquake between Nepal and Bihar, the report says.
Besides Gahalaut, the study team included scientists from the Earthquake Research Institute, Gandhinagar. National Institute of Geophysical Research, Hyderabad; VCSG Uttarakhand University of Horticulture and Forestry, Pauri; Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun and GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development, Almora.
Chittenipattu Puthenveettil Rajendran, a seismologist at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, says the study “repeats an earlier hypothesis that the central Himalayas are strongly correlated and anticipate a major earthquake anytime soon.”
Rajendran told this reporter that the Garhwal-Kumun sector of the Himalayan arc (including parts of Nepal and India) has not experienced a major earthquake in the past 600-700 years. “This means that more than 20 meters of seismic slip has accumulated during these years, which can only be released by one or more earthquakes (Mw > 8.5) in the region.”
“This poses a grave danger to the densely populated Himalayas and the adjacent alluvial plains – which the government has not seriously considered,” Rajendran noted.

What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
